Messiah is one of the Christian world's most highly esteemed and popular works ever. It is almost like an 18th century musical which contains so many hummable tunes, rousing choruses, memorable moments and virtuoso arias that it can be appreciated on many levels. It has always been a great favourite with amateur choirs and in central Florida there is even The Messiah Choral Society which exists purely to perform Messiah and raise money for good causes in the process.

The oratorio consists entirely of Bible passages from the Old and New Testaments and is divided into three parts representing Christ's birth, death and resurrection.  One of the most famous performances took place on 23 March 1746 which was attended by King George II. When he heard the words, 'The kingdom of this world...' the King rose to his feet and remained standing until the end of the number.

Various explanations have been put forward for this startling behaviour. It may have been in recognition that George's earthly kingdom was subservient to the Kingdom of Heaven. It may have been as a mark of awed tribute to the composer and his music. Or it may have been that His Majesty had nodded off and jumped up startled by the loud music. As a matter of protocol, no-one could remain seated while the King was standing, so the whole audience stood throughout.

The tradition remains to this day of the audience standing for the 'Hallelujah' chorus and is often observed even when there is no royalty present and even, it seems, among peoples who bear no allegiance to the British or indeed any monarch!
Harrogate Choral Society will be accompanied by Manchester Camerata Orchestra. With Philippa Hyde, Soprano Beth Mackay, Mezzo Soprano Oliver Dumati, Tenor Paul Carey Jones, Bass Andrew Padmore, conductor.
